More Ways to Demonstrate Skill

Christopher Jagers | March 12th, 2009

We just returned from the NERCOMP 2009 conference where we learned several new ways that a SlideRoom system could potentially be used. Various CIO’s and CTO’s informed us that many disciplines (other than art) require applicants to demonstrate skill as part of the application process. Inevitably, this is accomplished through a media asset (test, video, presentation, portfolio, etc…).

One use-case we had not heard before is to validate the English profenciency of International Students. They all have to take the TOEFL test to measure language skill. But scores alone are unreliable for a variety of reasons.  The schools need more “evidence,” which could consist of a video of the applicant speaking. This would allow reviewers to see/hear language skill, rather than just reading test scores.  Of course, SlideRoom will facilitate this perfectly!

CAA 2009

Christopher Jagers | March 2nd, 2009

SlideRoom was an official sponsor of CAA2009 Los Angeles this year. Ryan and I greeted people within the Book & Trade Fair for a few days. It is so nice to run into old friends and to meet with existing clients face to face. Additionally, we talked with several applicants who gave us some great ideas for improving the system (from their point of view).

The economy seems to have affected overall attendance.  The number of publishers exhibiting was down 15% and I overheard that sales were very low. The 50% discount on books seemed to have taken effect early, and even better deals were to be had on Saturday. This was a great opportunity for artists to stock up on books & supplies for very little money!

Trade Shows: Lessons Learned

Christopher Jagers | January 28th, 2009

In the past, we made several incorrect assumptions about what trade show visitors want to see. We assumed that visitors wanted a test drive, to experience the live system.  Wrong.  Visitors only want a 2-3 sentence summary and literature to take with them. So, we created a new booth to help establish a quick understanding and a content-rich brochure to take home (below).

Even more important than improving our delivery strategy, the most profound lesson we have learned is that trade shows are primarily an opportunity for us to LISTEN, to hear about your unique needs. The more we know, the more we can improve. Further, this kind of interaction is more likely to grow into a real discussion, which is mutually desirable.

Our goal this year is to learn as much as possible while we have the privilege of talking with you in person. Here is a list of shows we will be attending during the first six months of 2009. We hope to see you there!
